March 7, 2025: A Week of Firsts
This week has been full of **firsts for me** in my journey with horses! š“⨠Every challenge brought a new learning experience, and Bee, as always, made sure to keep things interesting.
ā First time measuring a horseās weightāwithout a scale! Itās done with a flexible tape measure and a special formula. She was a svelt 900 lbs. Definitely down from when we first got her, but moving in the right direction!
ā First time deworming a horseāan oral toothpaste-like medication that Bee was not thrilled about! Scarry when you consider the prior point, GULP.
ā First time dealing with a lame horseāsince we removed Beeās shoes (due to her kicking), I noticed her limping. After checking her hoof for any rocks or foreign objects, I reached out to my horse network for advice. The consensus? Rinse, give anti-inflammatories, and monitor her closely for a few days.
ā First time calling an equine vet for lamenessāDr. Roeber at Dark Horse Mobile Equine was incredible! In just three minutes, he pinpointed the issue, trimmed her hoof, drained the abscess, and wrapped her up like the back-leg boxer she is. š„
ā First time administering hormonesāin hopes of easing Beeās night"Mareā-ish tendencies and helping her get along with the herd. Unfortunately, sheās still not a fan of Dixie (the competition is real in the mare world) OR oral meds.
For now, Bee is on stall rest while her foot heals and her paddock dries out from the recent rain. It's all fun and games until someone ends up on stall rest!
š Until next time, keep buzzing!
