🐝 The Weekly Buzz with Bee – April 25, 2025 🐝 Rain, respect, and some muddy horse mama moments this week! The weekend rains had me hiding like the Wicked Witch (melting, ha!) 🧹🌧️—so Bee had more stall time and fewer visits from me. But Monday? Sunshine and saddle-ups! ☀️🐎 Bee played hard to get at first, but after some lunging in the round pen, she came to me—a big sign of respect. 💛 We rode in the arena, working on perfect circles in every corner, using reins, legs, and voice. Afterward, we did a walkabout around the property—she was a little sketchy but listened with some firm reminders. Progress! 🐝 🐢 Slow Feeder Update: Since Bee’s been stuck inside more with all this rain, we added a slow feeder net to her stall. She’s already a super slow eater, but this net helps stretch her meals even longer. It’s basically a tightly woven hay net that makes her work a bit more for each bite, mimicking how horses naturally graze all day in the wild. 🌾 This keeps her busy, prevents boredom (no stall pacing!), and helps her digestion stay on track. Plus, slow feeding helps reduce colic risks and keeps her from scarfing hay out of boredom when she’s inside more than usual. 🐴🕰️ Wednesday’s rain flooded her paddock, so I got muddy trenching it out. She still needed to be there after pasture time, and hey, she didn’t seem to mind too much. Giving her hormone shot? Easy peasy now. 💉✨ Not-so-sweet Bee moment? She pinned her ears and threw some legs at the mucker Wednesday morning… apparently, someone was hangry before breakfast. 😅 No one hurt, just her usual drama. My daughter, Dr. Payton Wise @tcanimalhospital, is a veterinarian who spends a lot of time extracting teeth from cats and dogs and advocates for proactive dental care. So consider this your gentle nudge (and shameless plug!) to stay on top of dental care for all your furry family members. Now back to Bee—and her big, beautiful, hay-chomping grin. 🐴 Horses’ teeth grow… forever-ish. Unlike ours, horse teeth continue erupting throughout their lives. It’s great for grazing wild pastures—but domestic horses need regular dental care to avoid issues like sharp points, hooks, or uneven wear. 🪥 That Tooth Gap? It’s Handy. There’s a natural gap between a horse’s front incisors and back molars—it’s called the bars of the mouth. It’s where the bit rests during a ride and, fun fact, it’s the “safe-ish” spot to check their mouth if needed. (Still—only if you know what you’re doing.) 😴 Yes, Horses Are Sedated for Floats Dental floats—where the vet files down sharp points and balances the teeth—are usually done under sedation. Why? Because horses have long, powerful jaws and a very strong chewing reflex. Even the gentlest horse can react suddenly when a file touches a sore spot. Sedation ensures safety for the vet, the horse, and their teeth—keeping the process smooth and stress-free. 🦷 Bee’s Dental Status: Bee hasn’t had a float under my care yet, but she’s staying on our vet’s regular schedule. With everything we’ve learned so far, we’re big fans of preventive care. 📆 Teeth Can Tell Age, Too. That old saying “long in the tooth”? It comes from horses. As they age, their gums recede and their teeth appear longer—making it a poetic (and slightly sassy) way of saying someone’s getting up there in years. Moral of the story? 🐝 The Weekly Buzz with Bee – April 18, 2025 🐝 This week brought workouts, a wash, and a little western drama. After a tough ride, Bee got her first full bath—mane and tail shampoo, gleaming coat, flowing black mane in the wind. I was soaked, but she looked stunning. Big thanks to our amazing coach Ashley Holland of Rock Solid Performance Horses for a confidence-building session. She asked if I needed a helmet (maybe), handed me a crop and bit, and gave us new tools + exercises to keep Bee focused. We followed up with two more days of training—plus lunging, which is guiding a horse in a circle on a long line to build discipline and release energy. Saturday we tested Bee’s kicking chains before herd turnout. Success—no kicks! But coming back in, she caught a leg, got a scrape, and on Monday, bumped her nose lunging in the round pen. A minor nosebleed sent me into first-time horse mom panic, but Dr. Roeber reassured me—definitely not EIPH (a condition where horses bleed from the lungs after intense exercise). Just Bee being Bee. We met Bri, Bee’s neighbor Royce’s mom, who owns the fabulous western boho clothing boutique, www.weboshe.com—check her out! Bee’s hooves are peeling a bit, so we’re applying oil as our farrier recommended. And we closed out the week with another early morning lesson and a peaceful turnout with the herd—finally. It was a week of effort, sweat, and soft moments. We’re still learning. Still trying. And still in it.
