This week's Bonus Buzz blog post is dedicated to @Katie Van Slyke and Baby Seven’s journey that taught us what creative, science based equine rehab looks like. Born very early, Seven spent months protected in casts, then worked with the UT Equine Performance and Rehabilitation Center using custom orthotics and careful graded exercise. He made it home this spring. On August 11 Katie shared that they said goodbye. In his honor, the Seven Scholarship now supports future equine vets at UT. In the blog I break down step by step care for extreme prematurity, thank the UT team, and share why veterinarians face higher suicide risk along with simple ways we can be kinder clients. We also have a family soft spot for UT. Our middle graduated from UT Knoxville, and our youngest chose K-State after getting into the UT vet program. 🐴 When a Horse Refuses to Eat, It’s Not Just Picky Eating This weekend, Bee gave us quite a scare. Horses are grazers by nature, eating nearly all day long, so when I walked into the barn Saturday morning and saw her standing in the corner with her head down, ignoring her hay and grain, I knew something was wrong. With the Texas heat, dehydration was our first concern. We checked her gums (they were pale, almost white), tried soaked feed, electrolytes, even watermelon… nothing. By late afternoon, I called Argyle Animal Veterinary Hospital. Their incredible team—Dr. Diaz, Dr. LaRue, and their tech—came out quickly, ran tests, and determined Bee was fighting a virus, not colic (thankfully). They even called ahead to Weems & Stephens to ensure she had a stall reserved just in case she needed overnight care. Thanks to their guidance, Ashley hauling her, and lots of monitoring, Bee’s fever came down, her appetite returned, and by Monday she was back out with her herd. 🙏 Lessons learned? ✔️ Loss of appetite is one of the earliest signs of trouble. ✔️ Colic can look different in every horse. ✔️ Quick action and a trusted vet team can make all the difference. Buddy sour lesson with Bee this week. I let her choose our path in the front pasture and she marched straight to her friends and parked it. We worked circles and figure eights near the herd, then rested a little ways off, and the light bulb started to flicker.
