March 28, 2025: Bonus Buzz- Why Do Horses Roll?
Ever seen a horse suddenly drop, wriggle in the dirt, and spring back up like nothing happened? That’s a horse roll—and it’s totally normal!
Here’s why horses roll:
🧼 It Feels So Good
Rolling helps scratch itches, relax tight muscles, and shake off tension. It's their version of a good stretch and a back rub—especially after exercise or standing still for too long.
🌾 Natural Skin Care
That dust coat? It acts like a natural sunscreen and bug repellent. Rolling also helps distribute oils through their coat and remove shedding hair. So when you see them dive into dirt, they’re not being messy—they’re being smart!
😌 Mood Booster
Relaxed, happy horses roll more often. A single, satisfied roll (followed by a full-body shake) usually means “I’m feelin’ fine!”
⚠️ But Watch for Repeats
If a horse rolls over and over or seems uncomfortable doing it, it could be a sign of colic or pain. Call the vet or let the owner know.
🐝 Bee’s Roll Reaction:
Bee hasn’t had her first bath yet—but after her first spritz of insect spray, she dropped like a rock and gave us a roll in the paddock. Wet coat? Not on her watch. 😂 Her expression said it all: “Nope, I’ll dry my way.”
So next time you see a dusty roll, smile—it’s probably the horse saying, “I feel great!” Or in Bee’s case… “I didn’t approve that spray.” 😆
