May 9, 2025: Sunshine, Speed, & Soggy Pastures

Sunshine, speed, and soggy pastures—this week had it all (plus a little puddle play and a new pasture pal).

We dried out over the weekend and finally got some good training time in. By Monday’s lesson, Bee and I were running barrels like a true team: she, a retired champion, and me… well, still in training. She handled the turns like a pro while I clung on and tried to keep up. Let’s call it “grace in progress.”

Then came the rain. Again. And again. And if you’ve ever driven past a pasture and noticed all the horses standing in the same direction—it’s not a barnyard flash mob. It’s actually smart horse behavior. Horses will instinctively stand tail-to-wind in the rain. Their coats are designed to shed water, and facing away helps keep rain from blowing into their eyes, ears, and noses. It’s also a herd safety tactic—lined up and alert to whatever might be coming. So yes, they’re smarter than us some days.

Back in the barn—on what I lovingly call Bee Boulevard (though some call it “The Penthouse”)—Bee seems to be forming a sweet new friendship with her boulevard mate, Josey. I spotted them out in the pasture together this week and even caught them “horsing around” by the lake. Peep the photo—with a perfect mirror reflection.

We seem to be hitting a rhythm of all good things. We’ve got her food intake at an appropriate level, her meds dialed in, and we’re training several days a week to keep her mind sharp. She’s coming to me in the pasture over and over again without reluctance now—which shows a real bond. It’s not just one-way anymore.

She still has her days (don’t we all?) and the occasional grumpy moment with other horses or humans—but those moments are fewer and farther between.

Catch you next week for more muddy hooves, mare drama, and Bee wisdom.
