July 11, 2025: Bonus Buzz - Letβs Talk Tack: What Your Horse Really Needs
New to horse life or just scrolling tack catalogs? It is A LOT. Saddles, pads, girths, bridles⦠and your wallet is already crying. Do not worry, we have you covered, Bee style.
𧡠Tack = Horse Gear
βTackβ refers to all the equipment for riding or handling a horse. Think wardrobe plus workout gear plus communication tools.
π Must-Haves to Start:
πͺΆ Saddle Pad β Cushions your horseβs back
π Saddle β Your seat. Western or English; fit matters!
βοΈ Girth/Cinch β Keeps the saddle on
π¦Ά Stirrups β Where your feet go for support
πͺ’ Bridle & Bit β Controls the horseβs head and mouth
ποΈ Reins β Your communication line
βοΈ Riding Helmet β Safety first! Always protect your head
π§° Tack-Extras That Bee Wears (Optional but Handy):
π Crop/Whip β Reinforces cues (not punishment)
β Spurs β Precise leg aids; use gently
πΊ Rear Cinch β Extra saddle security
π½ Breast Collar β Stops saddle from sliding back (we want the Weaver brand Back in Black Tapered Breast Collar but have not splurged yet)
β Tie-Down β Limits head movement (Western use)
For the beginner, thatβs enough. There are so many other tack pieces and options that it makes my head hurt.
π Beeβs Tack Situation
We are building our gear slowly with comfort over trends (but sparkle is still a win). And yes, my husband calls her tack trunk the βtackle boxβ because βstraps and buckles equal fishing.β Pictures below show what Beeβs wearing these days.
β¨ Pro Tip
Start with essentials. Learn what works for you and your horse. Add more as you grow in confidence.
We are saving for a lightweight Master Saddle too β just 15-17 lbs versus the 25-pound beast we hoist over Bee now. Lightweight equals better for both rider and ridee.
The right tack does not make you a rider, but it sure helps.
