April 11, 2025: Bonus Buzz - Fly Season Is Buzzing—Here’s How We’re Fighting Back
It’s officially fly season—and if you’ve ever seen a horse do the full-body twitch, tail swish, or stomp-dance in the pasture, you know just how annoying those little pests can be. 🪰
Protecting our horses from flies isn’t just about comfort—it’s about health, safety, and prevention. That’s why we’re getting ahead of it early.
Getting ahead of the mating and fly birth cycle is key, so we start our protection routine in early spring—before flies hatch in full force. And keeping stalls clean? That’s a non-negotiable. At our barn, we do clean-outs twice daily to keep things fresh and fly-free.
Here’s how Queen Bee is suiting up:
🧴 Fly Spray
We mist Bee daily with a long-lasting, horse-safe spray. She tolerates it… with mild side-eye.
🧦 Fly Boots
Her bright yellow boots (of course they’re yellow—she’s Bee!) help protect her legs from bites that cause stomping and sore joints.
😎 Fly Mask
Her mask? Let’s just say it’s...goofy. But it works. Fashion proof coming soon.
🐴 Fly Sheet
Lightweight mesh protection with airflow. Not her fave, but it works.
💊 Formula 707 Fly Control
This feed-through supplement prevents larvae in manure—gross but effective.
And a word of caution: bot flies are more than annoying. Left unchecked, they can cause colic, which can be deadly if not caught early. One of Bee’s pasture mates, newly relocated from Colorado, required emergency surgery because of it. That experience has us doubling down on prevention.
And speaking of boots… I’ve got new barn boots too—complete with tiny bees. Because if Bee’s gonna buzz, I’m buzzing with her. 🐝💛
Fly season may be here, but we’re ready.
